St. Joseph's Regional Medical Center
For
137 years, St. Joseph's Regional Medical Center has been dedicated to
serving the Paterson and Northern New Jersey region with health care,
housing, economicdevelopment and social service programs. The organization
is licensed as a not -for - profit, charitable institution, with all available
funds continually recommitted to enhancing services, as well as to providing
medical care to indigent and uninsured patients.
Today, the Medical Center operates many programs critical to the health,
safety and well being of Passaic County and the city of Paterson's citizens.
A core part of St. Joseph's mission is to care for the sick and poor,
and to reach out to those who might not seek care on their own. Many of
the initiatives reflect a long-standing commitment to providing a healthcare
safety net for the inner city population, while developing preventative
and interventional programs to improve community health status.
St. Joseph's community-focused programs include residential shelters
for the chronically, mentally ill homeless, for adult substance abusers,
for homeless elderly women and for babies born with the HIV virus. These
are in addition to after - school programs, housing rehabilitation and
economic development support, as well as its nationally recognized Breast
and Cervical Screening program and the Healthy Paterson Project recognized
by the State of New Jersey as a model urban program.
Additionally, St. Joseph's Family Health Center, established in 1980,
introduced primary care services for the under served in Paterson. During
2001, it provided over 35,000 primary care visits and 6,200 specialty
clinic visits. Total clinic visits exceed 200,000. In addition St. Joseph's
also operates a highly successful HIV/AIDS Treatment program, caring for
over 2,000 HIV+ patients annually. This HIV/AIDS treatment program has
been held as a model for care in a city that has the third highest number
of HIV/AIDS patients in the state.
As an acute care hospital and Medical Center for the Region, the Medical
Center operates the greatest number of acute care beds of any hospital
in New Jersey. SJRMC operates 792 licensed and staffed beds. These include
651 acute beds and 141 long-term care nursing beds, at the new St. Vincent's
Nursing Home. St. Joseph's provides a full range of tertiary care services,
except kidney, lung and heart transplantation. During 2001, St. Joseph's
provided inpatient care to 28,000 patients.
St. Joseph's also operates one of the state's four originally designated
Children's Hospitals --a dedicated 130 bed Children's Hospital within
the Medical Center, including a nationally recognized Neonatal Intensive
Care Unit, a Pediatric Intensive Care Unit and an exceptional obstetrics
and gynecological service. SJHMC delivers 2,700 babies annually, many
of them to high-risk mothers. St. Joseph's pediatricians provide care
to every school in Paterson.
St. Joseph's provides the largest, hospital based dialysis program in
the country, in part due to the high incidence of kidney failure reflecting
the endemic hypertension and diabetes in the Paterson community.
The Medical Center is a Level II Trauma Center and is equipped to handle
critically injured patients 24 hours a day. The Medical Center has a helistop
to receive airlifted patients. The Emergency Services Department includes
a separate 10-bed Pediatric Emergency Service with its own director and
staffed by pediatricians, which also provides 24-hour coverage. The Medical
Center also operates an "urgicenter" for non-emergent patients
who enter the Medical Center through the emergency room.
